laura and ryan – engagement photography

This engagement session was an extra special one for Andrew and I- Laura is Andrew’s sister & Ryan is an awesome guy that is now going to be our brother-in-law!  We’ve been waiting ever so patiently (well maybe not patiently!!) for the news that these two were getting married so we were pretty excited when we heard it was happening!

We had a beautiful winter day for their photos and lots of fun and laughter… the only challenges being the huge snowbanks and trying not to get stuck driving into yardsites.  We were pretty soaked by the time we wrapped things up but it was totally worthwhile!

Enjoy these photos of Laura and Ryan!!  We are so excited for their wedding coming up fast in June!

bride talk with melissa!

bridetalkyellow

I thought the winter months were going to go by so slow waiting for wedding season to begin but before we know it we will be back into the full swing of shooting weddings (SO excited!!)  I figured it was definitely time to feature another one of my awesome brides, and Melissa volunteered for the job!  So thank you Melissa for taking the time to do this and I loved finding out more about your plans.  We took engagement pictures for Melissa and Trevor back in the fall when we had sessions booked like crazy and failed to get some of them on the blog….. so here you get to enjoy a couple of their pictures finally!  Andrew and I are honored to be the photographers for Melissa and Trevor’s wedding in Regina this summer!

Enjoy this second edition of Bride Talk!!

What part of wedding planning do you spend the most time on?

I tend to really over-do it with many aspects of the planning, but I’d have to say I spent the most time dress shopping! It was very fun to begin with, and I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted.  I spent tons of time looking online and I tried on lots of dresses at different stores, in different cities.  I even got to go dress shopping when I was down in California in December. I found lots of dresses I really liked, but didn’t get that “this is the one” feeling, and I didn’t want to feel like I was just settling for one.  Then I started to find that the dresses were beginning to look the same and I was getting frustrated, so I made a list of likes and dislikes, and drew pictures of the two different styles I decided I needed to pick between.  Thinking I was never going to find my ideal dress, I had decided to settle on one of the others I liked when my mom and I were in Regina one day and pulled a dress out at one store.  We looked at each other and said “this is it” before I had even tried it on…. and it ended up being the one!

Have you used any online resources in your wedding planning?

Yes, I’ve looked up tons of stuff online from dresses, to cakes, hairstyles, flowers, centerpieces, etc.  I’m not sure how people planned weddings in the past without browsing all the ideas you can find online, haha. I even looked at unique wedding photo ideas, but I am going to trust you in that department!!

Have you seen what Trevor is wearing?

Yes, I helped the guys pick out their suits, but I haven’t seen the whole look put together yet so it will still be special on the big day!

Are you following any wedding traditions?

I’d like to follow some of them.  I’m not exactly sure yet what my something old, new, borrowed and blue will be.

Have you picked out your wedding day jewelry?

I have a few different things in mind, but probably won’t make the final decision until I can try a few different things on with my dress. I’ve always wanted to wear a pearl necklace for my wedding, but I don’t have one of my own, so maybe it will have to be my “something borrowed” or “something new” lol.

Do you have any stress relieving tips to share with other brides?

Try and have fun planning! Exercise also helps relieve stress and gets you looking fantastic for the big day!  (at least I’m hoping it will help me get looking fantastic… lol!!)

What part of your wedding are you most looking forward to?

All of it!! I’m sure it will fly by so fast and it will be so much fun.  There really isn’t one thing I’m looking forward to, just getting everyone together to celebrate is going to be great.  I can’t wait to see Trev’s face when I come down the aisle.  And I really hope I can hold it together but I KNOW I’m going to cry!

What is your biggest piece of advice for brides to be?

Remember the wedding is just one day; the important part of marriage is not the wedding day, but the life you will live with the man you love.  Have fun, be creative, don’t be afraid to ask for help, follow your heart, and enjoy every minute of it!!

Have you made honeymoon plans yet?

I’m super excited for our honeymoon because we love traveling together, but have never been on a trip where it is just the two of us, it’s always been with family or friends!  We think we will wait until the weather gets cold again, but when we go will also depend on whether or not I get into a Master’s program anywhere this fall.  I’d love to do a European trip full of sightseeing and adventure, but I think for our honeymoon we are leaning more towards a beach vacation in the Bahamas or somewhere near there.  I’m actually planning to leave the rest of the details up to Trevor…. I told him to not even tell me exactly where we are going and surprise me with fun stuff once we get there! Should be fun!

sophie and ella – newborn and childrens photography

I loved my time spent photographing 8 day old Sophie and her big sister Ella!  Both girls were as sweet as sweet can be!!  These girls are pretty lucky to have each other…. I know from experience that there is nothing like the bond between sisters…. these two are going to have so much fun growing up together!!

Jolene, the girls mom has a successful business in Montmarte, called JoJo Beads.  She creates each glass bead by hand and if you check out her website you can see some pictures of the step-by-step process!  Pretty fascinating!  So, of course it would be fitting that Sophie would wear one of her mom’s creations!sophie ella blog3sophie ella blog4sophie ella blog5sophie ella blog6sophie ella blog7

while mom was feeding Sophie, I got to play with Ella a little bit.  She was quite into having her own baby “Sweet Pea” photographed!!  So I figured Sweet Pea better make an appearance on the blog too!sophie ella blog10

birthday photo booth

Yesterday we had a birthday party for Desta and she had some friends from school come over for a few hours.  We packed a lot of activities into a short time, one of them being a fun little photobooth!  The kids loved it, I just put out a bucket of scarves and accessories and they dug out hats from the toybox and whatever else they could find!  Lots of giggles, shrieks and crazy girls!

Enjoy this little collage.  Oh yeah… and of course Andrew didn’t want to be left out of the fun so he snuck into a picture too!! I’ll be blogging more party details soon!  photoboothblog

some new toys

The last while I have become interested in playing around with film cameras and with the help of some great friends have figured out which ones would be the best for me to start with!  For a while I wondered why people would go from shooting digital to film (it seemed a bit backwards!)  As time passed by I have realized there is such a unique look to film images that digital just can’t capture.  It has made me excited to try it out!  I have a few film shooters blogs that I love to follow and find that they definitely have such an amazing quality and feel to them.  No, I will never give up digital because there are so many advantages, but for shooting for myself and just pushing myself creatively,  these are keeping things interesting for me!

My first purchase was a Holga and I recently shot my first roll of film with it.  It has been fun taking pictures and being forced to think more about the shot.  One of the things about digital is the ability to see the picture immediately and know if it turned out.  With film there is a bit of a waiting game and I know it will be exciting when I get my first roll of film back from the lab!

My next film camera purchase was the Polaroid SX-70.  I just loooove the dreamy looking images that are typical from this type of polaroid.  I just got film ordered for this one so I will have to wait a little bit to be able to take this one out!

I also have my sights set on another film camera but am waiting for the right one to come up on ebay!!  In the next while I will get some images scanned and up on the blog to share!!

aubrey – newborn photography

…..and another newborn!  This time, it was a 7 day old…..little Aubrey was so cooperative and was pretty laid back about being photographed!!  Even when she was awake during the session, she looked around her, taking things in, just as content as can be.

Aubrey’s grandpa made this bowl so it was a must to photograph her in it!!

nixen – newborn photography

Andrew and I first photographed Kristen and David’s wedding a couple summer’s ago and now I had the honor of capturing some photos of their new addition!  Nixen was 10 days old when Kristen brought him for pictures & it was so neat to see one of my brides now a mom!!  I got a good laugh out of this little guy…. I was told that whenever I turned away to grab something or switch cameras, he would open his eyes…. then shut them again before I was ready to take his picture!!

Enjoy a few pictures of Nixen….

win a baby book!

Recently I have been having a great time photographing babies!  I thought it would be fun to have a draw for those who book a newborn session between now and March 1st.  If you are pregnant and not due until after the contest closes that is just fine because the session just needs to be booked by then.  The catch: I want to photograph babies that are less than 2 weeks old, so you will just let me know your due date for now.  Then you will notify me as soon as possible after your baby’s birth to set up an appointment time.

So, the draw will be on March 1st, 2010 and the best part……. the prize is an awesome baby book designed by Kal Barteski and printed by Blurb!  I have these books for my kids and they are so so cute!!  I love how they aren’t a super traditional baby book and have plenty of space to keep writing through out your child’s growing up years.

As an extra bonus I have a fantastic booking special for these sessions …. email me through the contact button at the top of the blog for details!

lyla – regina newborn photography

Ooooh what a sweetie this little 5 day old princess was!  She was absolutely the perfect age for newborn photographs.  Lyla would open her eyes for a bit and look around, but she was such a good little sleeper and let me wrap her, unwrap her & move her all over the place!  I love the sleepy newborn photos and if you ask me, Lyla was the perfect little model!

sophie – baby photography

With our unpredictable Saskatchewan winters, we had to try a few times to plan little Sophie’s session.  Sophie is only 6 months old and LOVES being outdoors even during our crazy winters!  It was so fun to be able to incorporate some outdoor photos during our session…. even though we had to watch the forecast pretty closely to pick a nice day.  Our patience paid off though….. we had some beautiful weather for being outdoors and enjoying the snow!

It was fun to watch Sophie observing things with her big beautiful eyes….  we got smiles too but I am in love with her serious, taking it all in expression!
